for the love of ice cream

Yesterday morning at 745 a.m……we showed up at the hospital with Mason….

for his scheduled tonsil and adenoid removal surgery. I don’t know why i don’t think of these things before hand..

but i really wish i would have brought my video camera.

We got all checked in…and waited while the anesthesiologist came in and chatted with us…

then the surgeon….then the nurse.

The nurse brought in with her a liquid cocktail in a small cup for Mason to drink…

and told him to drink it quick because it didn’t taste good…but it was sure going to make him feel good.

Feel good in about 15 minutes or so.

Feel good as in….get real loopy and laugh at everything we said.

Feel good as in…

I think i needed some of that cocktail also.

Bryan thought he needed some too.

So when the nurse came back in to check on Mason….i Β politely asked if she had any extra she could hand out

to us…because we knew it was going to be a long day.

She didn’t laugh…and as a matter of fact…she raised her eyebrows at us…and frowned…

and i have a feeling she went and told the surgeon on us.

I have a feeling her funny bone was removed when she graduated nursing school.

the surgery went great…..

Mason came out of anesthesia just fine….and we came home and spent the afternoon on the sofa…

he’s been a real trooper. We are learning our own version of sign language….and last night i

remember what it felt like to have a newborn in the house again….by getting up every four hours.

Luckily there was no diaper to change.

It’s been rough….i’m not gonna lie….but as long as Mason takes his Tylenol with codeine every four

hours then it’s not so bad.

I pour his dose in his spoon and say…

one spoonful for you….

and one spoonful for me.

We’ve gone thru 1973944792837 gallons of ice cream….and some very nice friends have brought

over homemade soup……smoothies….and little gifts.

I even let Fin and Lola have ice cream for dinner last night.

I might have had a scoop or three for myself as well….and my favorite is …

chocolate peanut butter cup topped with a scoop of caramel crunch topped with a scoop of cookie dough.

Funny thing is….i stepped on the scale this morning and i believe there is a spring loose…

{so weird}

so i am going to have to take it in and get it fixed. My dryer is broken also…….

{totally unexpected}

i know it’s because it’s from the 80’s and only has one setting….which dried my jeans

super dry and even shrunk them a few sizes. I might let Lola have them now.

On a positive note…Mason will never have strep throat ever again…

or miss another day of school…or snore.

Not that snoring is a big deal….but i have a feeling that Fin will appreciate a snore free night.

p.s. I made a potato and mushroom gratin in which i boiled potatoes in heavy whipping cream.

p.p.s. I will give you the recipe soon.

p.p.s.s. That is…if i don’t die first from the cream running thru my veins.

p.s.s. I think i am turning into a true mid-westerner now that i used potatoes and cream in one dish.

p.s.p. Except i know for a fact that the French love Cream….so therefor i love cream.

p.p.p.p. I’m going to stop now….it’s time to give Mason some tylenol with codeine.

  1. I hope Mason feels better soon!

  2. I am glad the surgery went well, we have some hilarious pictures of Ali on the loopy juice.
I hope Mason feels better, my doctor did not tell me this, but the codeine is a huge constipator…I know right tmi, but since he will be on it for awhile, you might want to get some over the counter stuff to help him. We made smoothies with prune juice too~she didnt even know it was in there. Good luck πŸ™‚ The second week will be better! Smiles, Jackie

  3. hilarious.
I am glad you are back to blogging, I’ve been in withdrawal.

  4. Well good healing wishes to Mason! Least it’s over with before the New Year!
I might have to have a dinner of ice cream…

  5. He is such a trooper and ice cream always makes everything better…

  6. I have missed your postings and was wondering if you were just taking a little break.
So glad Mason is feeling better and that you had some well deserved ice cream.
I would love to see that potato in cream recipe. YUM.

  7. Glad he is feeling well!
One of my best girlfriends is a nurse and she would have given you a shot of liquid πŸ™‚ OK maybe not but she would have found you really funny!

  8. Glad to hear that he is well, or at least on the mend.

  9. I hate to tell you but I had my tonsils out when I was 5 and I had strep throat every year that I was in high school:( Missed a week every year. Hopefully that won’t happen for you.

Love the scale story. I think mine is broken too:) Are we going on that diet next week? πŸ™‚

  10. Glad that Mason’s surgery went well and I know he will heal quickly, and Jackie is right about the codiene causing constapation…….sneak something into his smooties and yours too….he, he, if you are dosing yourself with codoene also….lol…
    Love reading your blog

  11. Poor Mason…I pray that he is feeling better very soon! Your recipe sounds yummy, anything with potatoes and cream has to be good!! I hope your Christmas was wonderful!

  12. Kudos to Mason for being such a trooper. Hang in there Mom and each day he’ll be better as he heals and enjoys all the ice cream and popsicles he can have.

  13. Get Well Soon Mayson.
My scale popped two springs and gasket. I lost 4 lbs before Christmas so I could eat. Put on 5 so Im feeling 2 springs and a gasket is not so bad… But the skinny jeans are going to be in the closet a while

  14. My daughter broke her leg and was on Tylenol with Codeine. It does make for awful constipation so our doctor said to make sure she drinks lots of water. It really did help.
I hope Mason is on the mend quickly. Not the best way to spend xmas vacation but I suppose it is better than doing it in July!!

  15. I’m so glad he’s doing well!! I had my tonsils out last year… just before my 29th birthday. I did not recover as quickly as your trooper has. I couldn’t even eat ice cream… my mom came and stayed with me and after not eating for a week, and getting sicker because of it, she started forcing baby food down my throat. Ugh.
And so fun for your other kiddos that they got to eat ice cream for dinner!! What a fun treat πŸ™‚

  16. I remember when my younger sister got hers taken out! Speedy recovery to Mason and a good night sleep to all of you!

  17. I’m adenoid-free too. I was 5 and I remember waking up in “the middle of the night” and asking for a drink. I think the nurse may have given me Sprite. (my mom was an ER nurse in the same hospital) I tried to drink it sideways…without sitting up. That was smart. My dad gave me a little hot pink crocheted stuffed elephant. I still have it…but his tail fell off.

Happy healing to Mason, and happy ice cream eating to all ya’ll!

    : )

  18. Poor Mason.
My Emilyhad hers out last year and it was no fun I tell you.
Btw.. my dryer is broken also;-)

  19. I just read your previous post Kasey and you made my day!
What a special treet for those people ( and your kids) !
I say you can never have enough ice cream…
    hope Mason gets better quick!

  20. what fantastic friends
    definitely bummer about the dryer
and I’m so sorry it has been long nights and days for you all
I hope he is feeling better very soon!!!thinking of you all

  21. feel better soon Mason…ice cream for all..what a fab mom you have ;0!

  22. Poor Mason! I went through it with Rudy, so I know how you feel. Day 3 was the worst day for us, also don’t give him any red gatorade. I accidently gave some to Rudy and when he threw it up, I almost fainted, I thought it was blood! On another side note, Rudy had a huge growth spurt after he had them out! He grew 3 inches and gained 10 lbs in 4 months! The doctor said something about sleeping better and the growth hormone?! Anyway, you did the right thing! Rudy has only had 1 cold since he had them out 1 and half years ago! Take care!!!!!

  23. oh my goodness! i think i have a spring broken in mine also… must be contagious!!! πŸ˜›
i hope that mason has a very swift recovery!

  24. our daughter got her’s out last August (09) and then had what we now call the 4 month meal…she wouldn’t stop eating! and like the previous post said gained lots of weight and about 3 inches!…
not sure the dr. warned you about Mason’s breath…his breath will smell like death…rotting nasty end-of-the-world DEATH! and it will last for about 10 days…our pour girl had to start her 3rd grade year with death in her mouth! I couldn’t even sit next to her on the couch!
but the tonsils out was the best thing we did for her, she gets great sleep now, and it no longer sounds like a creepy 60 yr old man is sleeping in her room!

  25. Wishing Mason a speedy recovery! But…um… that doesn’t mean you have to stop eating ice cream, does it???

  26. this makes me so nervous. audrey my brand new baby has to have this surgery in 2 months when she is 18 months old! =( i am so scared!

her adenoids are way enlarged and she chokes on everything and stops breathing all through the night but the surgeon said he wouldn’t do it until she was 18 months WHEW because i dont know if i could of done it any sooner!

    im so scared =(

  27. Oh poor guy. Hope he is feeling better soon! I had my adenoids out when I was 6 and I remember every detail of the ordeal. Hope you get some sleep!

  28. Glad to hear that Mason’s surgery went well. I hope he has a speedy recovery!

  29. so much for that snoring dream, hmmm? I do hope that he is feeling a lot better today! Love that photo – you are the creative queen!

  30. hoping mason has a speedy recovery!!!!!!!!

  31. I had mine out when I was in 8th grade- but I still snore- or so some people say….One of my girls had hers out and when she felt better, I felt like I had been run over by a truck. I would not make a good nurse. Hang in there πŸ™‚
